Bistro Box Reimagined

Bistro Box Reimagined

Bistro Box Reimagined began as a studio project grounded in human-centred design and the shared chaos of NUS canteens during lunch hour. We spent time observing how students squeezed through narrow walkways, how cleaners made long detours to the dishwashing area, and how stall staff often had to shout order numbers because the screens were placed in less visible areas. These small moments of stress revealed how movement, space and timing shape the dining experience, which became the foundation of our redesign. We reimagined the canteen as a smoother, more intuitive journey. Curved panels guide people through the space while also shielding diners from the mess at the tray return, creating a more pleasant eating environment. Different floor materials subtly direct foot traffic, and a single unified queue removes confusion at the counters. Ordering kiosks and QR menus ease congestion, while clearer routes reduce strain on cleaners. We also introduced Bistro Bites, a 24-hour vending and resting space that repurposes an awkward corner where SDE students often pass through, giving late-night users a quiet spot to recharge.
